Geriatrics for Medical Students

Why Geriatrics?
It is unlikely that more than a handful of a given University of Utah medical school class will go on to specialize in Geriatrics. Nevertheless due to the demographic imperative and the aging of our population, it is estimated by the year 2010 most physicians will spend more than half of their time providing care for older individuals. In addition, there is an expanding body of knowledge specific to the care of older patients. Therefore, the University of Utah School of Medicine believes it is important to prepare its graduates to be competent in providing care for older individuals.
What is the purpose of the geriatrics portfolio?
Learning outcomes are presented in multiple courses and clinical experiences throughout all four years of the medical school curriculum. The purpose of the portfolio is to provide students with an accessible, convenient mechanism to highlight the geriatrics content presented across the four years. Students are able to track the acquisition of learning outcomes as they are achieved over the course of their medical school training. The learning outcomes have been established as minimum competency standards in geriatrics for graduating medical students who will enter a variety of specialties. They are taken from a guideline published by the American Geriatrics Society (AGS).
